Identifying modified theories of gravity using binary black-hole ringdowns

چکیده
Black-hole spectroscopy, that is, measuring the characteristic frequencies and damping times of different modes in a black-hole ringdown, is powerful probe for testing deviations from general theory relativity (GR). In this work, we present comprehensive study on its ability to identify spectrum Kerr black hole GR. Specifically, investigate performance spectroscopy diverse set theoretically motivated as well phenomenologically modified spectra. We find while signal-to-noise ratio ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{RD}}$ ringdown required modification GR depends details modifications, introduces $\ensuremath{\sim}1%$ shift fundamental mode can typically be distinguished with ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{RD}}\ensuremath{\in}[150,500]$. This range feasible next-generation detectors, showing promising science case spectroscopy.

Applicability of the Newman-Janis Algorithm to Black Hole Solutions of Modified Gravity Theories
The Newman-Janis algorithm has been widely used to construct rotating black hole solutions from non-rotating counterparts. While this algorithm was developed within General Relativity, it has more recently been applied to non-rotating solutions in modified gravity theories. We find that the application of the Newman-Janis algorithm to an arbitrary non-GR spherically-symmetric solution introduce...
متن کاملBlack Hole Entropy for Two Higher Derivative Theories of Gravity
The dark energy issue is attracting the attention of an increasing number of physicists all over the world. Among the possible alternatives to explain what as been named the “Mystery of the Millennium” are the so-called Modified Theories of Gravity. A crucial test for such models is represented by the existence and (if this is the case) the properties of their black hole solutions. Nowadays, to...
متن کاملSearch techniques for gravitational waves from black-hole ringdowns
The first kilometer-scale gravitational wave observatories, LIGO [1] and VIRGO [2], are expected to begin performing searches for astrophysical sources of gravitational waves in the year 2002. By this time, it will be necessary to have data analysis software for on-line searches. Because the anticipated signals are expected to be weak, near-optimal strategies for data analysis will be required ...
متن کاملHigher order gravity theories and their black hole solutions
In these lectures notes, we will discuss a particular higher order gravity theory, Lovelock theory, that generalises in higher dimensions than 4, general relativity. After briefly motivating modifications of gravity, we will introduce the theory in question and we will argue that it is a unique, mathematically sensible, and physically interesting extension of general relativity. We will see, by...
متن کاملBlack Hole Binary Dynamics
We discuss a new N-body simulation method for studying black hole binary dynamics. This method avoids previous numerical problems due to large mass ratios and trapped orbits with short periods. A treatment of relativistic effects is included when the associated time-scale becomes small. Preliminary results with up to N = 2.4×10 particles are obtained showing systematic eccentricity growth until...
